A while back I mentioned Magellan’s voyage in a large sprawling post about ocean voyages, anyway I’ve just discovered Dan Carlin’s excellent history podcast ‘Hardcore History’ which devotes an entire episode to the craziness of The Age of Discovery, which Dan Carlin explains as the exploration equivalent of playing Russian Roulette (that’s Magellan getting his arse kicked above). The podcast doesn’t have the slickness of Radiolab or This American Life, it’s basically just Dan explaining stuff and at times I thought I heard a low atmospheric hum, which may or may not have been intended – either way, it’s worth a listen. He’s also done a 5 part series on the Fall of the Roman Empire, which I’m only just starting to get into.
